  1. TYPE DISUNION RELEASE NOTES

  4. This is a one-dumb-job INIT (Extension). It does one very stupid job,
  5. then gets off the road. It patches _nothing_ so it's entirely safe to
  6. use in any Macintosh, System 7 or 6.

  9. What does it do?
  10.  
  11. Type Disunion does this: at startup time, it deletes the Adobe Type
  12. Reunion file named "Type Reunion Data". This is the database ATR
  13. creates to generate heirarchical font menus. Type Disunion searches
  14. in the System Folder (for System 6 users) and the Prefernces Folder
  15. (for System 7 users). If "Type Reunion Data" is found in either of
  16. those folders, Type Disunion deletes it. If not, nothing happens, and
  17. Type Disunion removes itself from memory. Adobe Type Reunion
  18. generates a new copy of "Type Reunion Data" when it sees that none is
  19. present.

  22. Why does it do it?

  24. About a half-dozen times a year, I trace bad Mac flakiness to a
  25. corrupted copy of "Type Reunion Data". Every time, I do all the
  26. obvious stuff first, remembering too late to delete that pig.
  27. Consequently, I wrote this little INIT to kill it with each boot,
  28. assuring that it can never be corrupted for long.

  31. Installation...

  33. System 6: Drag Type Disunion into your System Folder.

  35. System 7: Drag Type Disunion _onto_ your System Folder. You will be
  36. asked if you want to put it in the Extensions Folder. You do.

  38. Type Disunion will execute with your next boot, and every boot
  39. thereafter.

  42. Special considerations...

  44. Because ATR will have to recreate "Type Reunion Data" with each boot,
  45. your boot times will be longer by an insignificant amount.

  47. If you use an INIT/Extensions manager, be sure to turn Type Disunion
  48. on. Take note that it should be loaded _before_ ATR. If it isn't, ATR
  49. won't notice it's without a copy of "Type Reunion Data" until you do
  50. something requiring fonts. No tragedy: it will just create the
  51. database then, rather than at boot time.

  53. Lastly, if you don't use ATR, this won't do anyting for you (grin).
